Darlene Joyce (Simpson) Green, age 81, of Lamoni, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph Donald and Leota Elsie (Elliott) Simpson, was born January 19, 1936, at home in Lamoni, Iowa. She died at her Lamoni home on Sunday, December 10, 2017.

Darlene grew up, attended school, and graduated from Lamoni High School in 1954. While in school, Darlene was a cheerleader and the majorette. In 1950, when she was 14, she was queen at the Lamoni Fair. In 1955, she represented Lamoni at the American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri as a queen candidate.

In 1955, she started an eight-year employment in the athletic department at Graceland College as the secretary. Over the years Darlene worked as a waitress for the Sale Barn Café in Lamoni for several different owners. She also worked for the Dinner Bell in Eagleville, Missouri as a hostess for eight years, the Wagon Wheel in Lamoni, Dan Myers’s car lot as a secretary, and the Outpost Café. She retired from her job at Gary’s Inc.

In June of 1956, Darlene married Harold Lloyd Green. They adopted a two-month old baby boy, Kurtis, in June of 1962. Kurt was Darlene’s pride and joy. He was like Darlene, as he never knew a stranger and loved to visit with people, just as she did. Darlene always flashed her smile and said a friendly hello to everyone she met. She and Harold divorced in 1980.

Darlene made friends easily, but her best friend was her mother. They enjoyed going to thrift stores and yard sales. Darlene also enjoyed reading. Her family and friends were very important to her.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two half sisters and their husbands, Wanda and George DeBates and Irene and Robert Martin.

Survivors include son, Kurt Green and Jo McDaniel of Lamoni; two grandchildren; six great grandchildren; good friends, Curt and Kathy Shields of Lamoni; a niece and two nephews; and other relatives and friends.

No services are planned at this time. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa. [Interment was made at Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.]
