Freda Mae Osborn, age 92, of Davis City, Iowa, was born May 10, 1924, in Woodland Township southeast of Leon, Iowa to Ernest Lee and Florence Hannah (Williams) McDaniel. She passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

The family moved from her birthplace to north of Davis City when she was a year old. As a child she attended Center Hill School, a one-room schoolhouse, until fourth grade. Then she attended Davis City School participating in basketball, Girls Glee Club, and a small band. She graduated in 1941.

After graduation she worked in Leon, Iowa at the Ben Franklin 5 and 10 Cent store. In 1945, she went to work for Dr. G.P. Reed in Davis City as a receptionist and doctor’s assistant.

She was united in marriage to Francis Lorraine Osborn in Ames, Iowa at the United Methodist Church on the Iowa State University campus on September 3, 1949. They made their home in Davis City and were blessed with four daughters, Marcia Lynn, Ramona Kay, Brenda Mae, and Carla Sue. Francis, known as Heavy, died on December 30, 1987.

In February of 1988, Freda started working at the Funshine Day Care Center in Lamoni, Iowa as a cook. She retired after several years to be able to spend time with her family, especially grandchildren and great grandchildren. She dearly loved her family and was always ready to help any of them or others when needed.

Freda loved her flowers, gardening, canning, and animals. Her hobbies included crocheting, embroidering, reading, puzzles, playing cards and Bingo with family and friends. She was a faithful member of the Davis City United Methodist Church. She was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star of Iowa in 1947, holding several offices. She was also in Hawkeye Links of Iowa and was Grand Representative of Iowa to Rhode Island for two years. She and her daughter, Brenda, both attended and enjoyed. Freda was a VFW Auxiliary member, secretary/treasurer of the Davis City Community Hall for years. She always enjoyed going to her girls’, grandchildren, and great grandchildren’s school and sporting activities. She was also very active in community events.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Heavy; two granddaughters, Cassandra Sue and Chelsey Lee Evans; brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Maxine McDaniel; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Bruce Murphy; nephew, Wayne McDaniel; and great nephews, Charles Lee McDaniel, Jr. and Les McDaniel.

Survivors include her daughters, Marcia and Rex Houk of Princeton, Missouri, Ramona Clark and friend, Doug Duyck, of Davis City, Brenda Osborn and husband, Rodney Boles, of Lamoni, Iowa, and Carla and Marvin Evans of Davis City, Iowa; grandchildren, Amy Osborn, Jennifer Clark, Rhett Boles and friend, Tessa Otto, McCayla Evans and friend, Josh Taylor, and Chanelle Evans and friend, Tyler Morris; great grandchildren, Kierra Osborn and fiance, DeMarkus Horton, Ajah Ballew, Levi Clark, Gideon Porter, Alexis Clark, Aubrey Hartley, Nadia Osborn Rowe, Raven Clark, and Lavelle Osborn Rowe; step grandchildren, Valerie Boles Wagoner and Angela Boles Steenberg, and their families; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Freda leaves us with so many good memories and was a great role model and leader. She celebrated her 90th birthday May 10, 2014, at the Davis City Community Center with a host of family and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who were blessed to have known her.

Services were held March 24, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., Davis City United Methodist Church, Davis City, Iowa. Interment was made at Davis City [I.O.O.F.] Cemetery, Davis City, Iowa.
