Obituary ~ Franklin Hine Pering

Franklin Hine Pering, age 84, of Des Moines, Iowa, the son of William Earl and Alice May Mathews, was born December 9, 1932, in Omaha, Nebraska. He died at the Central Iowa VA Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday, June 11, 2017.

Frank grew up and started school in Oregon. When he was junior high age, the family moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Frank served two years in the United States Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he took advantage of the GI Bill and attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1957, with a degree in mechanic engineering. His first job was at Iowa Sprinkler in Des Moines. Then he did odd jobs before he and a friend of his started a TV shop in Des Moines, where Frank did the repairs. Then he worked for Lowry and Thomas companies doing organ repairs. He farmed in the Murray, Iowa area for a time before starting at Picker, a medical imaging company in Des Moines. He installed the first MRI machine in Des Moines at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. His last job was being a lab assistant and instructor of electronics at Des Moines Area Community College. He retired from there on January 16, 1998.

On August 7, 1958, Frank married Lois Mildred Rumley in Huxley, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Matthew, Julie, and Janie. She preceded him in death on December 16, 2011.

In his free time and after retirement, Frank loved to read historical books and taught himself Japanese, German, and Latin. He also enjoyed operating his ham radio and going to garage sales. He was a member of the Des Moines Amateur Radio Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and wife, Lois.

Survivors include his children, Matt and Kelly Pering of Des Moines, Iowa, Julie Akers and significant other, Dan Robinson, of Dallas Center, Iowa, and Janie Pering of Altoona, Iowa and significant other, Tom Stegemann of Kansas City, Missouri; 10 grandchildren, Corey and Theresa Pering, Bradley Davis and significant other, Marjie DeVries, Jennyfer Akers, Stephanie and Brandon Van vleet, Jaymes Akers, Jeremyah Akers, Christopher Foulke, Alayna Foulke, Jaycob Robinson, and Jackson Deutsch; great grandchildren, Keigen Davis, Mason and Presley Van Vleet, and two more on the way; sister, Nancy and Vince Granowicz of Waterford, Michigan; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017, with Pastor Dale Short officiating. Memorials may be given to Central Iowa VA Hospital Hospice in Frank’s memory.

Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
