Leon, Decatur County, IowaFranklin Dee Goering, age 82, was born April 4, 1935, to George and Gladys (Lovell) Goering, in Marion County, Iowa. He passed from this life on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Westview Acres in Leon, Iowa.
When Dee was three years old his family moved to the family farm at Lacona, Iowa. He attended Hazel Glen and Lacona High Schools. Since his brothers went off to war, Dee had to leave school after completing the ninth grade, and work in the farm.
On October 20, 1957, Dee married Alice Loudene Mitchell at Chariton, Iowa. In this union there were five children, Jon, Gregory, Charles, Janet, and Marsha.
Dee had jobs at various factories including the Ford Company. His love of the earth and running his fingers in the soil as he planted his garden and going to the fields to plant the seeds was his greatest joy. He enjoyed making hay and caring for his animals. His greatest pleasure was climbing in the combine in the fall to harvest what the Lord had given him so he could take care of his family. There are many family tales of growing up with a strict father, but many times when he showed his soft side, too. Dee loved taking his kids morel mushroom hunting and showing them what hard work was. He was a dad, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Dee loved a good game of cards, especially cribbage. If he could steal a point, he would. He was funny that way.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Alice Goering, of Leon, Iowa; his children, Jon & Lore Goering of Mesa, Arizona, Gregory & Lori Goering of Lacona, Iowa, Charles Goering of Williamson, Iowa, Janet & Casey McKinnon of Kansas City, Missouri, and Marsha & Bill Welter of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Michael, Patricia, David, Steve, Mindy, Michael, Andrew, Monica, Cara, Adam, Nicole, Grant, Chasity, Charles, Casey, Cody, Cassie, Marty, Eldon, and Mina; 28 great grandchildren; sister, Katharine & Bill Jorgenson of New Virginia, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Sandy Goering of Newton, Iowa, Anna Goering of Chariton, Iowa, Dorothy Allen of Chariton, Iowa, Joyce & Bob Martin of Des Moines, Iowa, Patsy & Mike Musgrove of Chariton, and MeMe & Bruce Mussmann of Des Moines; friends he called brothers, Larry Pech of Lincoln, Illinois and Jack Jones of Bethany, Illinois; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, George and Gladys Goering; siblings and their spouses, Melvin Goering, Ferdinand & Goldie Goering, Roy & Neola Goering, Darrell & Viradene Goering, Ivan & Louise Goering, Georgie Goering, Kenneth Goering, Donald Goering, Frances & Dean Krutsinger, and Rosaline and Bill Kimzey; daughters-in-law, Carla Lash Goering and Donna Goering; parents-in-laws, Bernice and Clede Mitchell; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Mitchell and Donald Allen; and sister-in-law, Edith Wilson.
Services were conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2017, Lacona Community Center, Lacona, Iowa.
Slade - O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni handled arrangements.
