Helen LeNora Lucille (Noftsger) Gray, was born on the home farm in Bloomington Township, near Lamoni, Iowa, on December 10, 1918. She was the youngest of four children born to Albert Franklin and Ida MayBelle (Hendrickson) Noftsger. She passed away at her home on June 7, 2017, at the age of 98.

Helen grew up on the family farm and attended Wion Country School, which was located where her home is now. She attended through the eighth grade. In 1978, she received her GED high school diploma through Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Clifton Russell “Doc” Lukenbill on August 28, 1940. To this union two sons, Duane LeRoy and Jackie Paul, were born. Doc passed away in October of 1950. She later remarried Lyle Devon Gray in 1953. To this union Janet Jo was added to the family.

Helen spent her life as a homemaker and a farm wife, always cooking or baking something. She loved to cook and always had something to eat when you or a neighbor dropped by, which they often did. Homemade cookies and pie were always served with hot cups of coffee. She worked at various jobs, such as the Lamoni Sale Barn Café and the Decatur County Hospital for many years.

She loved picnics, bonfires, camping, getting together with family, playing cards, and she loved to have people in her home. She always made everyone feel welcome.

Preceding her in death were her parents; first husband, Doc; son, Duane Lukenbill in August 2010; brother, Henry “Hank” Noftsger; and two sisters, Frances Sellers and Annie Orfield.

Survivors include her husband, Lyle; son, Jack Lukenbill and wife, Dee; daughter, Jan Gray, all of Lamoni, Iowa; grandchildren, Terrie Hutton and Stuart of Oak Creek, Colorado, Troy Lukenbill of Nunn, Colorado, Jacque Harrell and Jon of Sprinfield, Missouri, Lisa Jones and Jill Elliott and fiancé, Drew Aho, all of Lamoni, Iowa; great grandchildren, Sara Slaughter, Matt Slaughter, and Ashlie Leanne, all of Colorado, Kelly Harrell of Springfield, Missouri, Levi Harrell of Wanaka, New Zealand, and Luke and Logan Jones of Lamoni, Iowa; and other relatives, neighbors, and friends.
