Leon Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
March 01, 1923

William Neil Shy, son of Richard Neil and Sarah Elizabeth Shy, was born Nov. 28, 1852, in Delaware County, Iowa, died Feb. 24, 1923, at his home near Carlisle, Ark., age 70 years, 2 months and 26 days. When he was about 4 years of age, his parents moved to Decatur County, Iowa, settling on a farm 4 1/2 miles northwest of Leon, where he continued to reside until the spring of l907 when he moved his family to Arkansas.

On Feb. 9, 1873, he was united in marriage to Josephine Garber. To this union four children were born, Frank P. Shy, of Rupert, Idaho; Samuel L. Shy, of Carlisle, Ark.; Mrs. Jessie Woodmansee, of Lamoni, Iowa; Mrs. Edna Millsap, Hazen, Ark.

On Feb. 9th, Mr. and Mrs. Shy celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary and it was a great comfort to him to have his children all present.

He had been in declining health for the past two years, but was not confined to the house at any time and his death was really unexpected.

Short services were held at the home, Sunday, Feb. 25th at 1:30, conducted by Elder Hargis, Pastor of the Christian Church of Carlisle, after which he was brought to Decatur County, his old home where he had lived for 51 years, to be buried by the side of his father and mother, and sister. He was one of the pioneer teachers of Decatur County. He was of a quiet but happy disposition, always honest and upright in his dealings and to know him was to be his friend. In his death the family have lost a kind and loving father and husband and the community a true friend, husband and the community a true friend.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 28, 1923, at 2:30 at Union Chapel, conducted by Rev. G.T. Ronk of the Brethren Church, and the body was laid to rest in the adjoining [Shy] cemetery.
