The Des Moines Register

February 13, 2013

Stephan Randall Hampton, age 65, died on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa. Stephan was born in Leon, Iowa on June 27, 1947, the only child of Martin Samuel "Newt" Hampton and Ola Kathleen (Johnson) Hampton.

He attended Leon Schools until the family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where Stephan graduated from East High School, Class of 1965. He later graduated from Drake University with a BS in Sociology. Stephan worked as a Wage Claim Administrator for the State of Iowa. He was very active in the AFSCME Union, holding posts of treasurer and active negotiator for Local #3450. He was elected and served as the Polk County Democratic Party Treasurer for 25 years.

Stephan was married to Rebecca Ann Gray in 1968, and they had one son, Steffan Corey Hampton in 1969. They later divorced.

Stephan and Mary Lea Bryant married on July 22, 1986 in Leon, Iowa at the home of Willa Bryant, Mary's mother. The couple made their home in Des Moines, where they were both employed.

Stephan enjoyed reading. He was an avid music fan, especially the Blues. He and Mary loved retirement, husbandry, woods and cropland on their third-generation farm in Mercer County, Missouri where they lived for three years. Their son, Steffan, and mother, Kathleen, often joined them. Although Stephan never turned in his fishing hat for a Red Seed baseball cap, he loved the area.

Preceding him in death was his father, Martin, in 2001.

Surviving Stephan is his wife Mary Bryant of Cainsville, Missouri; son Steffan Hampton of Des Moines; mother Kathleen Hampton of Ackworth, Iowa; many relatives and friends, as well as his Democratic Brethren.

Following cremation, a Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are through Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon, Iowa.
