JOSHUA P. HALL, WIDELY KNOWN RAILWAY MAN, DIES

General Agent of Santa Fe in Denver Succumbs to
Influenza Following Severe Cold Contracted Less Than Week Ago
__________

(By Bruce A. Gustin.)

Joshua P. Hall, general agent for the Santa Fe railroad here and one of the most widely known railroad men in this part of the country, died at his residence, 37 Logan street, at 8:10 o'clock Wednesday morning [April 22, 1925] after an illness of less than a week.

Influenza was the cause of death. Hall was seized with a heavy cold last Thursday. In spite of that, his devotion to duty was such that he continued to go to his office and perform his work. Saturday night, his condition became serious. In his delirium Wednesday morning, only a few minutes before he died, he insisted on going to his office.

Hall is survived by a sister, Miss Margaret B. Hall, who lived with him, and by a brother, James H. Hall of Chariton, Iowa. His wife [Ettta May (McClelland) Hall] died several years ago [1914]. Miss Hall was prostrated by the shock of her brother's death.

Hall was born Nov. 11, 1854, at [Page 6] Chariton. He was a son of William J. and Mary Walthall Hall.

BEGAN RAIL CAREER AS MESSENGER BOY.

He began his railroad career in 1869 when he entered the employ of the Burlington at Chariton as a messenger. While in Chariton, he learned telegraphy and form 1870 to 1873 he was a telegraph operator on the Iowa division of the Burlington.

He continued in the railroad business until 1877 when he became cashier of the largest banking institution in southern Iowa, continuing in this capacity until 1881.

Then he came to Denver and joined the Santa Fe in the capacity of chief clerk. Promotion followed promotion until 1896 when he became general agent in which capacity he served up to the time of his death.

HAD WIDE CIRCLE OF FRIENDS IN WEST.

During his forty-four years of service in Denver, Hall was instrumental in building up the business of the Santa Fe in this territory to its present high volume. He had a wide acquaintance and an unusually large circle of friends. He took an active interest in Masonic affairs, having been a member of this Masonic order for many years, but gave virtually all of his time to his railroad duties.

Hall was a member of the Denver Athletic club for many years and also was a member of the Denver chamber of commerce.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

[Interment was made at Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.]
