Obituary ~ Marjorie "Bernice" (Carmean) Garton
November 11, 1917 ~ January 14, 2010Marjorie "Bernice" Garton, 92, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Bright Kavanagh House on Thursday the 14th of January due to heart failure after living a simple but profound life.
A mother's love is something you can't explain. Bernice lived and breathed for her sons. She was a selfless mother to her five children. When they looked into her eyes they saw the purest form of love. Whether it was praying for their safe return from war, cheering them on at every baseball game, or helping guide them through life's challenges she was always there to love, cherish, and protect her boys. She greeted all her family and friends with a smile almost as big as her heart. Never did she ever want for more than she had. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are a living portrait of her courageous self.
Bernice is survived by her sons Jim (Margaret), Chuck (Mary Ilif and Marcia), Gene (Kathy), Dennis, and Bobby (Cathy). A brother Bill (Elva) Carmean of Ames, a sister Sara Bell of Marshalltown, many nieces and nephews, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Hazel Carmean, her husband John, sister Florence, and infant grandson Michael Robert.
Due to her son Dennis becoming her angel and personal caregiver he added precious years on to her life. As a result, Bernice was able to make it past her 90th birthday and her treasured "last Christmas."
Memorial contributions may be made to Bright Kavanagh House or Hospice of Central Iowa.
A private burial will be held at a later date in Leon, Iowa.
