Obituary ~ Anna Louise (Bower) Lane
November 22, 1927 ~ November 24, 2016

Leon Journal-Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa

Anna Louise Lane, age 89, world's greatest chicken and noodles maker, died at her home in Leon, Iowa on November 24, 2016, surrounded by the things that she loved--family, food, holiday tradition, and laughter.

Born in Cainsville, Missouri on November 22, 1927, Louise was the only child of Eldon and Beryl (Corlett) Bower. She built a large, loud, and loving family with her husband of forty-three years, Clayton Lane, including five children: Robert, Raymond, Richard, and Deborah Hartley (her children from a previous marriage to James E. Hartley) and Jim Lane, eight grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She was the type of matriarch, hostess, and cook that could single-handedly whip up a meal for more than forty people, while humbly announcing "it wasn't much."

She was the type of mother who would save her waitressing tips for months, divide them evenly amongst her five children, and let them skip school for an annual Christmas shopping trip.

She was the type of grandmother who thought nothing of playing a card game with you until two o'clock in the morning; who would happily spend an entire afternoon fooling her grandsons into believing she had a "basement bobcat"; and who didn't bat an eyelash when her granddaughters played in her expensive makeup.

And she was the type of great grandmother who stocked her after-school snack dish with M&Ms; who would quietly remind you that you were a good boy or girl; but who would still handily beat you at a board game.

She was funny, loving, forever welcoming, and tenacious until the very end: Even in her final days she insisted on one last "noodle-making lesson" -- ensuring that her food traditions would not only live on amongst the women in her family, but also in her great grandson, Paxon, who she proudly taught to cut noodles "a mouse's tail width."

She also taught us that there are no substitutes for hard work or real butter; that there isn't much a cup of coffee, a good laugh, or a competitive card game can't cure; and that you don't have to be perfect to be good.

She was good...and she will be terribly missed.

Left to cherish her memory is her family: Bob and Peg Hartley of Mount Vernon, Missouri and Rick Hartley of Chicago, Illinois; Ray and Jo Hartley of Smithville, Missouri, Pat and Angie Hartley, Mason, Xean, and Spencer of Leon, Iowa and Kimi and Terry Bernhardt, Ethan and Emma of Kansas City, Missouri; Rick and Lorraine Hartley of Chillicothe, Missouri, Ryan and Lisa Hartley, Morgan, Maddie and Mayson of Clarinda, Iowa, and Nathan Hartley of Olathe, Kansas; Deb and Allen Applegate of Leon, Iowa, Todd and Tricia Applegate, Alaina, Mya and Paxon of Leon, Iowa; and Jim and Judy Lane of Williamsburg, Iowa, Sarah and Chris Collins, Bridget and Tatum of Lawrence, Kansas, and Cindy Lane and Ben Fee and Jude of Des Moines, Iowa. Also left to honor her memory are Sherry and Bill Greenwood, whose friendship and help to Louise in later years was invaluable.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 28, 2016, at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home, Leon, Iowa. Interment will be made at Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.
