Decatur County Journal
January 28, l9l5

CHARLES LABAN NORTON, son of SAMUEL and
CORDELIA NORTON, was born in Lee
County, Iowa, July 23, l857, died at his home
in Leon, Iowa, January l8,
l9l5, aged 57 years, 6 months and 27 days.

His parents were pioneer settlers and moved
to Decatur County when he
was a small boy where he has ever since
resided. He was married to
LOVINA LILLARD at Garden Grove, February 4,
l883, who died December 26,
l9ll. To this union four children were born:
JOHN, SHELDON, ALMA and
MRS. HELEN WATSABAUGH. On April 30, l9l2, he
was again united to MRS.
ANNA GORE at Bethany, Mo., who together with
his children, five
brothers, one sister still survive him and
who are left to mourn his
loss.

The deceased was raised on a farm and since
coming to Leon was engaged
in stock buying, principally horses of which
he was a great admirer, and
who shipped many car loads to the different
markets. He was quite
successful until about two years ago his
health began failing when he
was compelled to cease his labors. The best
of medical aid was obtained
but no relief could be furnished and the end
came peacefully Monday
morning. He was a man of strong convictions
in what he considered right
and always ready to defend his convictions.
He loved his family and
friends and was never better pleased than
when surrounded by his
faithful wife and family at his hospitable
home. He was honorable and a
good citizen and while his sickness was long,
suffering intense, he was
never known to complain, and will be missed
by all who knew him.

The funeral services were held from the home
at l0 o'clock Thursday
morning, conducted by Frank A. Garber, a
life-long friend of the family,
and laid to rest in the Leon Cemetery. He
was also a member of the
Yeoman Lodge No. l64 at Leon, Iowa.
