Decatur County Journal
October 22, l9l4

FRANCIS MARION WALKER, the subject of this
sketch, was born in Clay
County, Ind., July 9, l839, and departed this
life after a long and
painful illness, October l7, l8l4, at the age
of 75 years, 3 months and
8 days. He accompanied his parents to Mercer
County, Missouri, in l852,
living at home until his enlistment in the
Union Army in September of
l86l, serving in the 7th Mo. battalion
cavalry for six months, from
March, l862, until September of the same year
as Company C. 35th
Infantry in which he served until he was
discharged in December, l863,
on account of wounds received in service. In
l864 he engaged in the
mercantile trade in Princeton, Mo., until
August, l865, when he moved to
a farm near Pleasanton, Ia., where he
remained until l880, when he moved
again to Davis City, one year later,
returning to Pleasanton where he
lived six years, when he moved to his present
location, l l/2 miles east
of Pleasanton, where he died.

He was united in marriage to (?)E. DREESE,
May 28, l864, and to this
union were born two sons and three daughters:
WILLIAM S., ARTHUR, HATTIE
E., ESTELLA and IVA, all of whom survive him
except the last named, who
died in infancy.

The funeral was held from his late home
Sunday afternoon, October l8,
conducted by Rev. E.F. Partridge, who alluded
to the long and useful
life of the departed, the esteem expressed by
the presence of the large
number of old-time friends, and assured the
bereaved of the care and
love of a wise Heavenly Father. Sweet songs
were the offering of the
M.E. Choir. Prayer was offered by Father
Mark.
A large concourse of people from surrounding
towns and country were in
attendance and followed in a long impressive
procession to the cemetery,
where covered with flowers, the casket
containing all that was mortal of
one of our oldest and best respected
citizens, was lowered to the last
resting place by old friends and comrades of
the civil war.

Thus passes one of the most familiar figures
of this part of the
county. Having lived well, he died well and
leaves a savory memory
behind him a rich heritage to the loved ones
left to mourn their loss.
"He rests from his labors and his works
follow him."

*Note: It looks like MARY E. DREESE (however,
I'm not sure.)
