Vera Neal McBroom of Osceola, the daughter of Chester and Alice Neal Hockensmith, was born Sept. 6, 1911, at Ollie and died March 20, 2003, at the Osceola Nursing and Rehab Center in Osceola. She was 91.

She lived most of her childhood around the LeRoy area, except for few years in Minnesota.

She married James Keith McBroom on Oct. 11, 1929, and they became the parents of four children, Clovis “Toby”, Richard “Buck”, Rosa and Kathryn.

Mrs. McBroom worked hard all of her life. She raised the children, did farm work and even did carpentry work. She worked at an Osceola Casey’s General Store when she was 72. She was able to relax in her later years. In 1998 she suffered a stroke that took her eyesight, short-term memory and ability to walk.

Mrs. McBroom was a wonderful woman, wife, mother and grandmother. She was easy going, gentle, kind, and devoted to her family. She had a sense of humor. She enjoyed reading, music, crosswords, crocheting, playing cards watching basketball and traveling. Her suitcase was always packed and ready. She missed seeing only the states of Maryland, Delaware and Hawaii.

She was baptized at the Last Chance Church and had a strong faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1989; son Toby in 1987; five brothers, Paul, Chester, Lowell, Bruce and Duane Hockensmith; and two sisters, Kay Potts and Lois Houck.

Mrs. McBroom is survived by three children, Richard “Buck” McBroom and his wife, Pat McBroom, of Garden Grove; Rose Niday of Plattsburg, Mo. and Kathryn Grimm and her husband, Roger Grimm, of Osceola; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a sister Twyla Disner and her husband, J.P. Disner, of Brighton, Colo.; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Nelson of Aurora, Colo. and Lela McBroom of Summerdale, Ala.; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. McBroom were March 22, at Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon the Rev. Terry D. Robert officiating.

Casket bearers were her grandsons, Bradley Grimm, James McBroom, Kyle McBroom, Scott McBroom, Jim Niday Jr., Jon Niday, Kerry Niday, William Niday and Clay Paulsen. Interment was in the Metier Cemetery, east of Weldon.
