Obituary ~ The Rev. Lloyd Alexander Latta
May 22, 1914 ~ December 09, 2013

The Reverend Lloyd A. Latta, 99, of Mount Pleasant, IA died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, December 09, 2013 at his residence.

Friends may call from 12 Noon to 4:00 PM on Saturday, December 14 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 2-4 PM Saturday afternoon. A celebration of life service will be held on what would have been Lloyd’s 100th birthday, May 22, 2014. The time and location of the service will be announced closer to the date of the service.

Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Methodist Church in Medellin, Columbia, through First United Methodist Church of Mount Pleasant or to the mission activities in any of the churches which Lloyd served. Lloyd Alexander Latta was born May 22, 1914 in Rouleau, Canada. He was the son of John Richard and Amy McClary (nee Jones) Latta. As his parents were United States Citizen, Lloyd returned with his family to Iowa as a young child. He grew up on a ranch near Coon Rapids, IA. On May 22, 1940, Lloyd was united in marriage to Beulah Ardella Dickey in Beulah’s hometown of Redfield, IA.

Lloyd graduated from Coon Rapids High School. He attended Moody Bible School in Chicago, and received is B.A. degree in 1940 from Simpson College in Indianola. He received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from the Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL in 1944. Later, he was conferred with a Doctor of Divinity degree from Simpson College.

The Rev Latta served United Methodist Churches in Garden Grove, Afton, Osceola, Red Oak, Washington and Fort Dodge, IA. He also served as Administrator for Friendship Haven, a United Methodist retirement community in Ft. Dodge. The Rev. Latta also served as a District Superintendent for the Newton and later Mason City Districts of the United Methodist Church. Lloyd participated in the Lacour Evangelical mission to Japan in 1954 and in 1963 to Great Britain. Following retirement from the full-time ministry, The Rev. Latta served the Trenton United Methodist Church for 14 years.

Those thankful for sharing in Lloyd’s life include his wife of 73 years, Beulah of Mt. Pleasant; 4 children – Marilynn Knight of Columbia, SC, Rosilyn Laliwala of Albany, NY, Richard Latta and his wife Nelly and Robert Latta, all of Mt. Pleasant; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Fern Latta of Boone, IA, 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

His parents, 2 sisters – Ruthie Latta and Ethyl Fillman and 3 brothers – Ret Latta, The Rev. Cecil Latta and The Rev. John Latta preceded Lloyd in death.

Interment at Oakland Mills Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, IA, 52641

Kimzey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
