Obituary ~ Bethany Danielle Gruich
November 12, 1996 ~ December 08, 2014

Leon Journal-Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
December, 2014

Bethany Gruich, age 18, the daughter of Michael Anthony and Lori Kay (McBroom) Gruich, was born November 12, 1996, in Austin, Texas. She left this life at her Lamoni, Iowa home on Monday, December 8, 2014.

Bethany considered herself to be from Texas, even though she only lived there for a few months of her life. The family then lived in Illinois for three years before moving to Lamoni. Bethany attended pre-school through high school in Lamoni. Her graduation ceremony was December 7, the night before her death, at the Lamoni Community School in front of approximately 300 people. Sister, Kayla, accepted Bethany’s diploma for her.

Bethany was an active teenager, ripsticking and constantly ruining hers and her sister and brother’s bikes from doing jumps and tricks. While in school, Bethany’s favorite subject was art, followed next by gym class. She participated in track, volleyball, bowling, and softball. She loved having Dana, her paraprofessional, with her the past two years. She enjoyed being on the Mayor’s Youth Council and Service Learning. She volunteered in many facets, including putting up flags downtown, visiting the nursing home residents, and helping with after school programs. After meeting and making friends with some girls from Japan, Bethany felt compelled to do something to help Japanese residents after the 2011 tsunami, so she ordered bracelets and sold them. The summer Bethany was 14, she visited with Winnie Kessel at her Crown Colony home often. After her diagnosis, she also sold some of her artwork and donated the money to the Ronald McDonald House.

In November 2012, Bethany was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, cancer of the brain. She endured two years of treatments, which included surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. She always was willing to try the treatment and never wanted to give up. She always had her favorite stuffed animal, Pablo Picasso the Penquin, with her. She also loved having many other stuffed animals with her, as they gave her great comfort.

Preceding her in death were her grandparents, Ray G. McBroom and Elizabeth Gruich; great grandparents, Jeannene “Nana” and Robert “Pete” Malone, August and Mable Gruich, Clell and Lela McBroom, and James and Elsie Liddle. Survivors include her parents, Michael and Lori Gruich, of Lamoni; sisters, Kayla Gruich and fiancé Ty Lysinger of Blue Springs, Missouri and Hannah Gruich of Lamoni; brother, Nicholas Gruich of Lamoni; grandparents, Nellie McBroom of Lamoni, Patricia “Grammy” Rodgers of Taylor, Texas, and Michael, Sr. and Sandy Gruich of Long Beach, Mississippi; aunts and uncles; the family dog, Chili; and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Shaw Center on Graceland University campus in Lamoni, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 12, 2014, with Pastor Woodie Ladnier and Pastor Jackie Hill officiating. Burial will be the Metier Cemetery near Weldon, Iowa.

Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa.
