Graveside services for both Chester "Chet" and Beryl Cartwright were held on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at the Leon Cemetery.

Refreshments were served at the Methodist Church in Leon after the services.

Memorials can be made to Patty Elwood Center, 21668 80th in Cresco, Iowa or the Central Decatur Community Schools Scholarship fund.

Chester, 89, died peacefully Friday, August 5, 2005 at the Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, Iowa.

Chester Reed Cartwright was born to Clarence and Mabel (Glenndenning) Cartwright on November 30, 1915.

He was united in marriage to Beryl Bethards on February 14, 1935 at Corydon, Iowa. They had two daughters, Janet and Nancy. They spent most of their married life in Decatur and Clarke counties and moved to Cresco in 2000 due to failing health.

Chet had worked at many jobs throughout his life. He had farmed for many years before becoming the owner of a gas tank wagon that serviced area farmers and construction crews. He then leased and ran the DX station in Leon for many years. After retiring, he worked for Saxton Construction and he and Beryl enjoyed taking the camper to many towns while working on road construction.

He was an avid gardener and was particularly proud of his tomato plants which he shared with family and friends.

Chet is survived by his daughters: Janet and husband Karlos McClure of Cresco, IA, Nancy and husband Don Gordon of Centennial, CO; grandchildren: Tony McClure of Dallas, TX, Shondel (Ray) Baum of Pueblo, CO, Shelly (Jeff) McAllister of Cresco, IA, Chris (Carrie) Gordon of Burlington, CO; great-grandchildren: LeRoy and Alycia Franklin, Cody and Casey Gordon, Meghan, Kaitlin and Austin McAllister; sisters: Alice (Bill) Amsberry of Des Moines, IA, Pauline (Wilson) Shira of Phoenix, AZ; brothers-in-law: Raymond (Eileen) Bethards of Albany, OR, Harry (Eloise) Bethards of Seymore, IA, and Richard (Joyce) Bethards of New Virginia, IA.

He was preceded in death by his wife Beryl; parents: Clarence and Mabel; in-laws: George and Goldie; sisters-in-law: Floy (Ray) Sparks, Gerada (Bud) Richardson, Dorothy (Van) Sparks, Beulah (Dave) Fisher, Virginia Bethards and Kay Bethards; brothers-in-law: Delbert (Pauline) Bethards and Gerald Bethards.
