The Leon Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
Thursday, March 25, 1925

Marion A. Richards was born in Garden Grove, Iowa April 28, 1883. Here he grew to manhood his entire life being spent in our city. He was united in marriage to Georgia Phipps at Leon, Iowa July 4th, 1906 by Rev. Ray Shipman. To this union were born five children, all of whom are living; Gerald, age 11, Lola, 10, Elvin, 8; Geneva, 4, and Marjorie, age 18 months.

Marion was a steady, quiet unassuming, hard working young man. He was honored and respected by the entire community. He numbered his friends by the score. He was public spirited and did all he could to help in worthy enterprises for the community. He was a member of the K. of P. fraternity and for a number of years a very active member of the band. He was a natural musician and his services were always sought in musical progrmas whether for the town or church. His willingness was appreciated by all. When but a small boy he joined the M.E. Sunday school and took an active part in the work. In his home life Marion was an affectionate and indulgent husband and father. His presence when the day's work was done was always announced by his cheery whistle. He allowed no sorrow or burdens to mar the happiness of the home that he could prevent. His thoughts were always for his family's welfare. He planned for their happiness. Year and year he toiled on with a heart of love to bring sunshine and joy to his home.

In the community he stood high in esteem of al lwho knew him. Honest and upright, dependable, generous to a fault. His going from our midst is [illegible].

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereved wife and children. A little over a week ago he came home with symptoms of influenza. For a few days he held his own against the disease but pneumonia developed and despite constant attention and special care of a nurse he slipped quitely away to a better world at 3:30 in the afternoon; Monday Dec. 16th. At the time of his death he was 35 years, 7 months and 18 days old.

Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn him, his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs Anson Richards, one sister and three brothers one of whom is with the soldiers in France, and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock at the home, conducted by Rev. G.J. Winslow. The body was laid to rest in the Garden Grove Cemetery.
