Obituary ~ Marion Marguerite (Fowler) Porter
October 22, 1815 ~ August 10, 1891Decatur County Journal
Leon, Decatur County, IowaIN MEMORIAM
A letter from Miss MARION E. PORTER, of Marion county, Kans., says there were several discrepancies and inaccuracies in the obituary of her mother, and requests the publication of the following:
At dawn of day on Saturday, Aug 10, 1901, the lovely spirit of our aged mother, Mrs. M. M. PORTER, went out with the angels to meet her God.
MARION MARGUERITE FOWLER was born Oct. 22, 1815, in New York City, where she lived to womanhood, and where she was baptized in the Methodist Church in an early age.
On May 8, 1837, she was united in marriage to JESSE J. PORTER, of Platchouge, Long Island who was baptised in the Methodist Church in his 12th year, and was raised to manhood by Methodist parents.
After the marriage they moved to Greenville, Ohio, where they resided for twenty years, and where eight children were born to them. In 1857, they removed to Sidney, Ohio. During their stay of six years there, one more child was born to them, and they were called to part with their eldest son and third daughter.
In 1863, they removed to Leon, Iowa, where they lost their youngest daughter.
In 1872, this patient hearted mother gave up her husband at God’s command. Always sweet tempered, true hearted and wise, she forgave her enemies, while they injured her, and her brave words of good cheer were always ready. While living in Leon, her three elder suns married, leaving one son and two daughters to care for her in her declining years.
In 1888, they removed to Marion, thinking it would benefit her health, and during her stay benefit her health; and during her stay of eleven years here, she regained a moderate degree of health. During the past hot weather she failed, and on Sunday, Aug. 4, she was stricken down with the disease that caused her death. After days and nights of suffering she went out in the early dawn of Aug. 10.
We weep not that our darling mother his left suffering, but that we shall be so lonely without her.
We sound our silent heart depths,
But we find a vacant place.
And our eyes in vain are looking
For a dear familiar face,
And feel a shade of sadness
One the sunshine of our sky;
For we know that we have wandered
All life’s better moments by.We feel our pleasures fading,
And our joys declining fast.
That the shadow of the future
Dims the sunlight of the past;
And in vain we look to native
For the light of other years,
Since our hearts are brimm’d with sadness
And our eyes suffused with tears.THE CHILDREN

August l5, l90lMARION MARGARET FOWLER nee PORTER was born in the busy hustling city of New York, N.Y., on September 22, l8l5, and died at Marion, Marion County, Kansas, August l0, l90l, at the ripe old age of 86. At the time of her death she was in the possession of all her faculties, and went about the home performing the ordinary ministries of life, when she was suddenly afflicted with inflammation of the bowels, which ended in her death.
In the year l832, she was married to JESSE JOHNSON PORTER of Brook Hansen, Long Island, in New York City. In the same year the yappy young couple emigrated to Greenville, Darke County, Ohio, where for twenty-four years they met and bore bravely the vicissitudes common to pioneer life. In l856 they removed to Shelby County, Ohio. In l863 they located at Leon, where one of the daughters, ZELLA REGINA, died. The father whilst on business near Cainsville, died suddenly at Mount Moriah, Mo., Sept. l5, l87l, and was brought home to Leon for interment.
The following children were born as a result of this union: TRUMAN BERKLEY, deceased; THOMAS JEFFERSON, St. Joseph, Mo.; WAYLAND MONTESQUE, Cleveland, N.Y.; VIRGIL ROE, Plattsburg, Clinton County, Mo.; DANIEL RICHARDSON and IDA CECILIA, Marion, Marion County, Kansas; ADELAIDE VIOLA and ZELLA REGINA, both of whom preceded her to Heaven. Her children rise up and call her blessed.
After the funeral service had been conducted in her home town by the M.E. Pastor, her remains were brought to Leon, where the Rev. Joseph Stephen, Pastor of the M.E. Church, took charge of the service, when she was tenderly laid to rest. She was a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church for many years, there being no church of her choice in Leon, she became one with the Methodist Episcopal Church.
She was free from guile, and she wore the white flower of a blameless life. She was patient in suffering and sorrow. She was a woman of high principle and sterling integrity. A good citizen, a faithful and devoted wife, and an affectionate and loving mother. Her name is as precious ointment poured forth. Peace be to her memory.
