Obituary ~ David R. "Dave" Funk, D.V.M.
August 26, 1963 ~ July 10, 2002

David R. Funk, DVM, died July 10, 2002, in an accidental drowning near Denison. He was 38.

He was born Aug. 26, 1963, in Bloomington, Ill. to William Grusy and Verle Augusta Moser Funk. He moved with his family to Garden Grove when he was four. He graduated from Mormon Trail High School in Garden Grove. He attended Iowa State University and graduated from the veterinary college in 1988.

While he was in college, David worked at the vet school. His boss was Ly-Lee Rene Bushore. They were married on June 16, 1984. Following his graduation from veterinary college the couple moved to Dunlap where he accepted a position with the Twin Valley Veterinary Clinic.

Dr. Funk loved his work, and he loved working with wood - whether he was splitting firewood or making a frame for his wife’s paintings. He also enjoyed reading and coon hunting. He was always calm and in the 20 years his wife had known him she had seen him mad twice. Once when he was shearing sheep and once when he was working 50 cattle by himself. He got so upset he kicked a cow and broke a bone in his foot.

“He was known as Dr. Dave. Those two words speak a thousand as to his personal relationship with clients and community,” said Dr. Koenig.

Dr. Funk was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter, Juliann Funk, in January of 1991.

He is survived by his wife, Ly-Lee Funk, of Dunlap; three sisters, Rachel Smith and her husband, Gene Smith, of Garden Grove, Willa Clark of LeRoy and April Parmer and her husband, Buck Parmer, of Humeston; two brothers, Tony Funk and his wife, Eileen Funk of Humeston, Bradley Funk and his wife, Laura Funk, of Garden Grove; and father-in-law, Bruce Bushore of Boone; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held July 15 at St. Patrick’s Parish Center in Dunlap with ministers of the Apostolic Christian Church officiating. Burial was in the Garden Grove Cemetery at Garden Grove. Fouts Funeral Home of Dunlap was in charge of arrangements.
