Obituary.

Mrs. SUSANNAH HARRINGTON DETRICK was born October 14, 1833, at Beardstown, Ill., and while yet a child her parents moved to Fairfield, Iowa, but for some cause returned to Beardstown where at the age of sixteen she was married to A. J. [Andrew Joseph "John"] DETRICK, the date of marriage being June 27, 1849. During her early girlhood she had been kept in the common schools of the time and had obtained a fair education.

Soon after the marriage with her husband she started westward and for a time lived at Burlington, and thence to Des Moines, where her husband became a partner in a newspaper. While living here first child, CHARLES, was born and later she went back to the old home in Illinois, where PHILLIP was born. Later they moved to Boonsboro (sic, should be Boonesboro - present-day Boone), Iowa, where they remained there for several years and during the residence there ELIZA, NANA, and KATE were born. They moved to Kansas, but did not remain long and starting to return to Des Moines, and on arrival at Leon, her husband being a printer, took a berth on the Pioneer Newspaper, and from then made their home here.

Mrs. DETRICK became a Christian at an early age and was a Cumberland Presbyterian and at her arrival in Leon she at once joined the M.E. church and continued a constant member during her life. Of the ten children born to her seven are still living, while three died in early childhood.

She possessed in a large measure the admirable qualities of patience, inbearance and self-sacrifice and exercised them throughout her life.

She left Leon in November last to visit her daughters who live west, stopping for a time in Kansas city, where BESSNB the (?) lived and from thence to Payette, Idaho, to spend a period of time visiting NANA, where she arrived December 15th, and really appeared improved in heath until two days before her demise, so that while death came suddenly it was not wholly unexpected to her. She arranged all business affairs, given directions as to her funeral and dictated a last blessing to her children. During the last sickness she made frequent mention of the many kind friends in Leon and those new found friends at Payette, who so faithfully assisted in making her last hours as pleasant as they could be.

Death relieved her of earthly cares February 9th, which was Saturday and on the following Tuesday Nanna started the long sad tour to bring the remains back for interment besides her husband, who died two years ago [January 22, 1893]. The trip was made without accident or delay and Leon was reached on Friday.

Of the seven children living all were present except CLARA. The memory of so good a mother as she has been ought to remain fresh and bright with the children for all time to come.

[Interment was made at Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.]
