March 30, 1969 ~ December 16, 2014Dale Robert DeLong, age 45, of Lamoni, Iowa, the son of Garland Keith and Sharon Louise (Young) DeLong, was born March 30, 1969 in Leon, Iowa. He died at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 surrounded by his family.
Dale grew up in Leon, Iowa. He attended Calvary Baptist Church as a child. He played left guard in football all seasons of junior high and high school. He also participated in the Special Olympics. He graduated from Central Decatur Schools in 1988. After graduation he was a farm hand for many local farmers. The last 15 years, he worked as a veterinary assistant at the Lamoni Veterinary Clinic in Lamoni, Iowa. He had a natural ability with livestock.
When Dale lived in Eagleville, Missouri, he was on their volunteer fire department. He was currently serving on the Lamoni Volunteer Fire Department.
Dale enjoyed BBQing and having a good time with family and friends. He will be remembered as a gentle giant with a big heart. He would do anything for his friends.
Preceding him in death was his mom, Sharon DeLong on October 27, 2014, and his uncle Larry Young.
Survivors include his siblings, Susie and Randy Vanderflute of Leon, David and Dawn DeLong of Warroad, Minnesota, Gary DeLong of Eagleville, Missouri, and Ronoka and Jack Schaff of Osceola, Iowa; 11 nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many, many friends.
Funeral services were held at the Lamoni Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 20, 2014 with Garry Henderson and Stuart Silver officiating. Burial was in the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa. Arrangements were through the Slade - O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa.
A memorial fund has been established by the Family.
