Obituary ~ Herman Lewis Deck
Iowa June 10, 1890 ~ November 28, 1983

HERMAN LEWIS DECK, son of AMOS W. and ALICE (KELLY) DECK, was born in Decatur County, Iowa June 10, 1890 and died Nov. 28, 1983 at the Leon Care Center, age 93 years and 6 months.

In his youth he attended rural schools in Decatur County and graduated from Leon High School in 1909. He attended college in Ames, Iowa for one year and also attended Capitol City Commercial College in Des Moines.

In 1914, he was united in marriage to GARLAND PHIPPS. To this union were born two children, a son PAUL and a daughter, VIRGINIA. this marriage was later dissolved and to subsequent spouses, ARDILLA COX RYAN and EVALENA LOVING SPENCER preceded him in death.

He moved to a farm south of Leon in approximately 1923. He remained there and continued to farm until his retirement in the early 1960’s. He entered the Leon Care Center in 1974.

As a child, HERMAN was baptized in the Methodist church at Decatur City and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Leon. He was a member of Grand River Lodge No. 78, A.F. & A.M. in Leon.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister and brother, both of whom died in infancy.

He is survived by his son, PAUL and wife ELAINE DECK of Green Valley, Az., daughter, VIRGINIA and husband WRIGHT TOMPSON, San Carlos, Ca.; sister, HELEN D. WILCOX, Osceola, Ia; 3 grandchildren; CHERILYN HOES and LINDA DANG, both of California and THOMAS DECK of Arizona; and 5 great grandchildren.
