Obituary ~ Ella O'Hara Comley
December 18, 1859 ~ July 30, 1890

ELLA COMLEY died at her home (the residence of her brother W. H. WILSON) in Woodland township, Decatur county, Iowa, July 30, 1890, of abscesses of side and lungs, Miss ELLA COMLEY; aged 30 years, 7 months and 12 days.

Her infant name was ELLA O’HARA and was adopted by Mrs. PHEBE COMLEY, January, 1860. They were formerly residents of Ohio and moved to Decatur county, Iowa, a few years after the close of the war, where she lived the remainder of her life. They resided in Leon some years where she received most of her education. She united with the M. E. Church at Leon, November, 1879, and lived a true and worthy member. She chose school teaching as her vocation and was one of Decatur county’s most successful teachers. She was attending school at Stansbury, Missouri, when taken ill and was brought home by her brother and so far recovered as to walk to Mr. STEPHENS'. But shortly after was confined to her bed and recovered. Her aim in life was to do all the good she could and make others happy and implant good impressions in the minds of the young. She had no selfish motive, but seemed to lose sight of self in her thoughtfulness for others; she was very patient during her sickness, but suffered intensely to the last, but as long as she retained consciousness she wanted those around her to rest.

Death seized her between 1 and 2 o’clock a. m., July 30, and expired at 9 a. m. during these almost 8 hours, she suffered all and more than it seemed possible for human to suffer; all was done that kind hearts and loving hands could do, but it was heartrending for her friends to watch her death agonies with no power to relieve. Her faith in God never wavered.

She leaves an aged mother and a host of friends to mourn her loss. She was held in high esteem by her scholars and all who knew her and it is hoped that the impressions made on her scholars will be lasting and they will endeavor to follow her example.

Funeral services were held from the residence by Rev. JEFFERY, of Leon, after which she was interred in the Lentz cemetery to await the resurrection. In her we have lost a noble worker and an honored member of society; all that can be said seems but a poor tribute to her memory.

But let God’s will be done. “He plucks our fairest, sweetest flowers.”
