Obituary ~ Lola Imogene (Harden) Cherry
December 25, 1900 ~ September 03, 1983

LOLA IMOGENE CHERRY, second child of JOHN WILLIAM and LILLIAN AVERILL HARDEN, was born in Mercer County, Missouri on Dec. 25, 1900 and died Sept. 3, 1983 at the Decatur County Hospital, Leon, Iowa, age 8 months and 8 days. Death was caused by cancer of the pancreas.

When the HARDEN family lived in Mercer County, IMOGENE attended Union rural school. The family moved to Leon on Feb. 14, 1914, on mile east of Leon. She then entered the Leon public school, graduating from high school in 1920 as valedictorian of her class. After graduation she taught 3 years in the rural schools of Decatur County, then attended college at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for 2 years. Upon graduation from college she taught 5 years as an elementary teacher in the Leon Public Schools.

On May 18, 1929 she was united in marriage in Centerville to CLIFFORD CHERRY of Corydon.

No children were born to this union.

After teaching in Leon, she taught 14 years at Granger, one year at Conroy and 18 years at Anamosa, making 41 years of teaching.

IMOGENE became a member of the Christian Church at the age of 14 at a tent meeting where the Casey’s Store is now located.

In November, 1919 she was initiated into the Equal Rights Rebekah Lodge No. 419.

She was preceded in death by her father on May 5, 1947; her mother on April 22, 1960; and her husband on Jan. 23, 1973.

Survivors include 5 brothers and 3 sisters; ELDON HARDEN of Allerton; ONIA HARDEN, Leon; HOWARD HARDEN, Lineville; ROSA SKIPPER, Centerville; EUNICE MURR, Leon; HAROLD HARDEN, Floyd, Iowa; ELMER LEE HARDEN Lexington, Mo; TWYLA HARDEN of the home; a step-daughter, WINFRED HULLING of Des Moines; several nieces and nephews; 2 step granddaughters and friends.

She was the first one of the 9 children to pass away.

IMOGENE was a member of the Decatur County Retired Teacher’s Association, serving as president for 6 years.

[Interment was made at Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.]
