Obituary ~ John K. Bennett
April, 1835 ~ September 01, 1882

JOHN K. BENNETT died at his residence in Center township, Friday, Sept. 1, 1882, surrounded by his wife and family who, in connection with a host of friends, did all they could to soothe his suffering. The deceased was born in New York State in April, 1835. His parents moved to Michigan when he was quite young. In 1850, they moved to Jo Daviess county, Illinois, they where he was married to Mrs. MARTHA MEYER in 1857. In 1859 he united with the Free Will Baptist Church and lived a consistent member until death removed him from the church militant to the church triumphant.

Bro. BENNETT was no sectarian. While he loved the church of his choice he was always ready to work in the Master’s vineyard, anywhere and on all occasions. He was superintendent of Sunday School at Palestine church, and was loved and respected to such an extent that his place will be hard to fill. Like all true Christians he loved his country and went cheerfully forward when the call for the Union was made. In 1869 Bro. BENNETT came to Decatur county and has resided here since. - It is needless to say that all who him loved and respected him. Always punctual to provide, scrupulously honest, a man of firmness, still cheerful, kind and affectionate. In his death his mourning companion looses a kind husband, his children an affectionate father, the church a zealous worker, and his neighbors a useful citizen.

Two children preceded him to the Spirit Land, a son and daughter. Three sons are living to cherish his memory.

During the six long weeks of suffering and intense agony he was patient, trusting in the atonement, and passed away strong in love and full of faith in a Redeemer’s power to save.

[Interment was made in Palestine Cemetery.]
