Leon, Decatur County, IowaAdrian Joseph Bowen second son of Elmer and Avo (Hickman) Bowen, was born May 31, 1919, in Ridgeway, Missouri and departed this life January 7, 1991 in Leon, Iowa at the age of 71 years, 7 months , and 6 days.
Adrian, also known as Jiggs, spent his younger years in rural Ringgold County, Iowa. He attended high school in Lamoni, Iowa.
During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed at several airfields in the United States.
After his discharge from the service he married Naomi Allen on Jun 6, 1946. They established their first home in Leon where they have resided for 44 years. To this union three children were born: Allen, Mary, Abbie.
Adrian worked as an auto mechanic at Hansell Garage, Butternut Baker Garage, and the Crouse Garage until he retired in 1972 due to poor heath.
He was always busy with woodworking, gun smithing, and collecting antiques. He never saw a stranger and loved to fellowship with you and old.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Leon, the Grand River Lodge # 78 A F and Am and the Order of Eastern Star. As long as his health permitted he was active in the Rod and Reel Lake Association and the American Legion.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Keith, and sister Betty.
Survivors include his wife Naomi Bowen of Leon; son Allen Bowen wife Bonnie and children Brent and Tara of Muscatine, Iowa, and Eric and Nathan of Blair, Wisconsin; two daughters, Mary Young, husband Rod and children Jarod and Adrianne of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Abbie Walderback, husband Brad, and children Adam and Jill of Leon; sister Elnora Van Clark and husband, ___, of Indianola, Iowa; two brothers: Warren Bowen of St Joseph, Missouri; Harlan Bowen and wife Ineva of Lamoni, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and a host of friends.
A memorial service was held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 8, 1991 at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa with the Grand River Lodge #78 A F & A M conducting the service. Also taking part in the service were Moses Yoder and Rev Lori C Patton. Burial will be in the Leon Cemetery at a later date. A memorial fund has been established for the Diabetes Foundation.
