Obituary ~ Merna Marie (Wookey) Cox
April 06, 1940 ~ August 31, 2014

Merna Marie Cox, age 74 of Grand River, Iowa, the daughter of William Day and Marie Viola (Norris) Wookey, was born April 6, 1940 at Osceola, Iowa. She died on Sunday, August 31, 2014 at Homestead of Osceola in Osceola, Iowa.

Merna attended country school before graduating from Grand River High School in 1958. Then she worked in Des Moines, Iowa at an insurance company. On August 20, 1961, she married Georgie Corwin Cox in Grand River, Iowa. They were blessed with two sons, Brian and Chris. Merna was a wife, mother, and homemaker when the children were young. Later she worked at the Van Wert store, Van Wert Enterprises, and then Industrial Hardfacing in Lamoni, Iowa. She retired in 2010.

Merna was a good cook. She enjoyed gardening, canning, mushroom hunting, and camping. For three winters, Merna and Corwin enjoyed wintering in Casa Grande, Arizona. In February of 2013, Merna's health problems forced her to move into Homestead of Osceola. Even in decling health Merna continued to spread her love of people throughout the center.

Preceding her in death were her parents and brother, Duane Wookey. Survivors include her husband, Corwin Cox of Grand River; sons, Brian Cox of Leon, Iowa and Chris Cox and wife Suzanne of Shawnee, Kansas; four grandchildren, Courtnie Cox and fiance Tyler Venn, Austin Cox, Jordan Cox, and Justin Cox; one great grandson, Drake Venn; brother, Doyle Wookey and wife Doris of Grand River; sister, Linda Hunt of Grand River; sister-in-law, Norma Wookey Binning and husband Gene of Grand River; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Trinity Christian Church west of Decatur, Iowa at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2014 with Rev. Terry D. Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Van Wert Cemetery, Van Wert, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established by the Family.
