It is with feelings of deep regret that we
announce the death of JOHN B.
GATLIFF, which occurred at his home two miles
northwest of Lineville, in
Decatur County, on last Thursday, November
ll, at 4 o'clock p.m. He had
been prostrated by typhoid fever, but was
getting along nicely with
every prospect of an early recovery, when he
exposed himself by going to
the well for water. A severe cold was the
result, which produced
pneumonia, ending in death. His funeral took
place on Wednesday
afternoon from the Elm Chapel, conducted by
Rev. W.C. Smith.
A large concourse attended, including a
number of his comrades of Jas.
H. Rogers Post G.A.R., of this place, of
which he was a member, who
acted as pall bearers in performing the last
sad rites over the remains
of the honored soldier and respected citizen.
The burying took place at
the Gatliff Family Cemetery near his former
home.

The deceased was about 52 years of age; was
born in Kentucky and came to
this vicinity with his father's family in
l853 and had resided on the
farm where he died, ever since. He had never
married and usually lived
alone in his comfortable home, occupying his
time in looking after and
cultivating his fine farm of l20 acres. He
was one of five children,
three of whom only survive, MRS. GREEN P.
DUNCAN, near Clio, MR. AD
GATLIFF, of Sargent, Neb., and MR. HAZ
GATLIFF of Decatur County. He
was a Union Soldier during the war, and a
pensioner at the time of his
death. He had never joined any church, but
was a regular attendant on
religious services, taking a deep interest in
church and Sunday School
work and contributing liberally to their
support. He was an honest man
and a good citizen, and his death is
universally regretted.

TRIBUNE.
