RAY, MCNEFF, HOWARD

JUSTINIAN RAY whose earthly life came to a
close in Leon, Iowa, Feb. 20,
l895, was born in Connersville, Fayette
County, Indiana, Dec. l7, l826,
aged 69 years, 2 months and 3 days. He was
the son of MARTIN M. and
RACHEL RAY. He was married in l852 to MARY
A. MCNEFF, who died in l857
at Sigourney, Iowa. He entered the marriage
relation a second time with
LUCY A. HOWARD at Romney, Hampshire Co., Va.
in l859. In l86l he
responded to his country's call for
volunteers and served her as a
defender during the entire period of mighty
struggle with armed
rebellion. He was 2nd Lieutenant of Co. D.
l5th Iowa, and Captain of
Co. D. l8th Iowa Regiment. He moved from
Sigourney to Chariton in l866
and thence to Leon in l872.

In early life he was a Methodist but
afterward went into the
Presbyterian Church. MRS. RAY and two sons
and two daughters survive
him to mourn the loss of husband and father.
MR. RAY in boyhood learned
the harness trade but his health would not
permit such close work; also
a merchant several years and when he moved to
Chariton went into the
drug business which he followed the rest of
his days. He was a charter
member of the Odd Fellows Lodge in Chariton,
also a Mason and member of
the G.A.R. He has two sisters living in
Litchfield, Ill.; was a kind
father and husband and was esteemed by all
who knew him. He died with a
complication of diseases; he had a stroke of
apoplexy about l0 days
before his death and could not speak to his
wife or children, or talk of
his suffering.
