Obituary -

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa January 2, 2008)

ROY LLOYD SMITH ... Roy Lloyd Smith, age 79 of Leon, Iowa, the son of Fred Russell and Florence Ann [Evans] Smith, was born October 11, 1928 on a farm near Leon. He passed away on December 28, 2007 at Westview Acres in Leon.

Roy graduated from Garden Grove High School in 1947. He lived in and around Leon most of his life, except for a few years when he worked construction. Locally he worked for the City of Leon and then Decatur County, where he did road maintenance. He retired in 1990.

On July 27, 1957 Roy was united in marriage to Betty Lou Pierson. To this union four children, Susan Ann, Roy Douglas, Charles Allen, and Darlene Kay, were born.

Roy raced go karts when his children were young and won lots of trophies. He loved riding motorcycles and owned several over the years, starting out with an Indian as a young man. He and Betty traveled all over the Midwest on the motorcycle attending races and rallies. Roy loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He taught all of his children how to ride a motorcycle. He loved to play ball and encouraged all his children to excel in sports. Upon his retirement, Grandpa could always be counted on to give rides to and from school and loving care when they were sick. Another favorite pastime was sitting on the porch with his family drinking coffee and watching people drive by.

Preceding him in death were his parents; grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty of Leon; children: Susan & Donnie McCleary and Doug & JoBeth Smith, all of Leon; Charles Smith of LeClaire, Iowa; and Darlene & David Fuller of Leon; 13 grandchildren: Janet, Samantha, & Tony Smith; Tasha Pace and husband Mitch; Cody & Dalton McCleary; Anthony, Karyn, Brooke, and Paige Smith; David, Ashley, and Spenser Fuller; six great grandchildren: Gentry, Karlie, & Jordan Pace; Jacob, Cadi, & Chase Smith; brother Harold Smith and wife Joan of Osceola, Iowa; nephews David and Dennis Smith; and other relatives and friends.
