DEATH NOTICE:

BAHNIUK, Walter, 62, of Alexandria, Virginia (formerly of Lamoni), died on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at his home, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

His wife requests, in lieu of flowers, that any donations be made to your favorite church or local School System in Walter's memory.

WALTER BAHNIUK ... Walter Bahniuk, age 62, of Alexandria, VA passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2011 in his home.

After a lengthy battle with cancer, he died peacefully in his sleep.

Walter was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 18, 1949 to Stanley and Mary Fredorchak) Bahniuk. He has one brother Frank, of Quechee, VT and one sister Martha Clymer of Aurora, NY. He married Uri Tanaka in 1975 and to this union were born two children. Justin currently lives in Los Angeles, CA and Eileen currently lives in Honolulu, HI. He married Theresa Estrada Barbour in 1999.

After graduating from Forest Hills High School in NY, Walter went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from The College of Emporia, followed by a Master of Science Degree from the The Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia both in KS. Upon completion of his education, he moved to Lamoni, IA where he lived until 2007. He began his career working for the county system in southern IA. Shortly thereafter, with the advent of the Area Education Agencies in IA, he became one of the first staff members hired in AEA 14. In 2007, after 33 years of service he retired and moved to Alexandria, VA. Here he continued his journey, working for Prince George's County Public schools in MD. He continued to collect awards for his outstanding performance, unique approach in promoting student involvement and his love of children. Walter was a member of Maryland Psychological Association / Foundation and National Association of School Psychologists.

Walter dearly loved the ocean. He enjoyed sailing, owning many sailboats through the years. He most enjoyed teaching his wife Theresa to sail so he could sit back and enjoy the ride on occasion. Walter was a religiously faithful man. He was raised Russian Orthodox and attended services whenever he could, but he also enjoyed attending and exploring other religions. He enjoyed working with the children for Sunday School and during Vacation Bible School in Lamoni, IA. He was never at a loss for ideas "outside the box" for getting the youngsters involved and excited. And that usually involved his infectious humor. He was blessed with the ability to make everyone feel good about themselves.

Walter is survived by is wife, Theresa, son Justin daughter Eileen, stepdaughter Cynthia Barbour of Forest Hills, NY, step-son Johnathan Barbour of Des Moines, IA, mother Mary Bahniuk, brother Frank sister Martha Clymer and numerous other relatives and friends.

Walter's request was to be cremated. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. His wife requests, in lieu of flowers, that any donations be made to your favorite church or local school system in Walter's Memory. In remembrance of his peace, love and determination ... Farewell.
