When he returned he married his sweetheart, Lois Maxine Bremer, on September 12, 1946. His most enjoyable pastime was attending family and community reunions, spending time in conversation.

Swain enjoyed children and was a 4-H leader. He liked playing cards with family and community friends. He loved country music and enjoyed watching country music performances on TV by the hour. Sometimes, he traveled to shows with friends as a special treat.
