ELTON ANDEW HANTHORN ... Elton Andrew Hanthorn, son of Thomas Elmer and Elsie Rosamond Barnts Hanthorn, was born November 15, 1924, in Sergeant, Nebraska, referred to by him as the "Sand Hills." The family moved to a farm near Leon, Iowa, in March of 1932. Elton attended East Eden rural school, later graduating from Leon High School. He joined the Leon Methodist Church at an early age and remained a member for this entire life. On May 10, 1944, he married Eva Pauline McKern at Princeton, Missouri. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon receiving an honorable discharge he started his lifelong career of farming, first with his father, then rented farms around Leon and Garden Grove. Elton and Pauline later purchased a farm north of Leon from Mr. and Mrs. Everett Waters. They lived there on the farm, which overlooked Little River Lake, for many enjoyable years.

Elton not only farmed, he worked for the ASC, was a substitute rural mail carrier, later becoming full time for several years. Elton moved from the farm after Pauline's death, living in three locations in Leon before settling at Terrace Park Assisted Living Apartments.

Elton enjoyed life. Some of his favorite things were sightseeing trips around Leon with wife, Pauline, and he knew every back road in Decatur County. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing golf. He greatly enjoyed vacations, especially in the West. He, also, enjoyed going to sales, playing cards and trading cars.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Pauline; brothers, Lyman Hanthorn and wife, Ula Mae; Warren "Pete" Hanthorn and wife, Lois Jean; brothers-in-law, Raymond Terry, Charles V. Lima, Chuck McKern and wife, Mickey; sister-in-law, Barbara McKern; nephews, Eric Hanthorn and Rickey McKern.

Elton is survived by sisters, Mary Jo Lima of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Joann Terry of Colona, Illinois; brother, Earl Hanthorn and wife, Joanne, of Leon, Iowa; brother-in-law, Dick Mckern of Marion, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Eloise McKern of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
