Obituary -

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa April 27, 2011)

FRANCES SAGE ... Frances Lucille Sage, age 96 of Leon, Iowa daughter of Clyde and Alice [Summers] Rauch, was born on their farm near Elk Chapel in Decatur County, Iowa on December 12, 1914. Frances died April 18, 2011 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon.

Frances grew up in the Elk Chapel area. She married Eugene Ralph Sage on February 27, 1933 at Bethany, Missouri. Six children were born to this union: James Louis, Bonnie Kathryn, Gary Dean, Russell Eugene, Dorothy Kay, and Charles Richard. The family raised cattle and farmed near Leon. Frances was a hard-working mother and homemaker. Until the end, Frances was still independent and sharp as a tack - doing laundry, grocery shopping, and cooking.

She kept a big garden and could grow anything. Frances loved raising flowers. She was an excellent cook, remembered by her boys for hot homemade biscuits for breakfast after shores, and also her salmon patties. Frances liked feeding her family and anyone who stopped by. She enjoyed being at home, making quilts for her family, and feeding everyone together at holidays. Frances liked picking gooseberries and mushrooms, taking walks through the pasture, and going for pickup rides throughout the countryside with her sons. Frances was a good mom and grandma, putting her family's needs ahead of her own.

Preceding her in death were her parents, 3 brothers, and 4 sisters; infant daughter Bonnie Kathryn; husband Ralph Sage; daughter Dorothy Hedman; and two grandsons, Brent and Bruce Sage.

Surviving are her four sons: Jame Sage and wife Donna of Des Moines, Iowa, Gary Sage and Wife Alta of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Russ Sage and wife Janet of West Des Moines, and Charlie Sage of their home in Leon; 9 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren; brother Merrill (Tommy) Rauch and wife Arline of Des Moines; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
