RUSSELL, HAZEL ADELE [MAINARD], 96, of Leon, Iowa died on Thursday, March 31, 2011, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, 2011, at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa, with pastor Dale Short officiating. Burial was in the Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, Iowa.

HAZEL ADELLE [MAINARD] RUSSELL ... Hazel Adelle [Mainard] Russell, age 96 of Leon, Iowa. was born November 21, 1914 in Coon Rapids, Iowa, to Tom and Emilia [Cabbage] Mainard. She was one of seven children. She died at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon on Thursday, March 31, 2011.

Hazel first married John Andrew Bucy in 1930. They were blessed with three daughters, Adeline May, Evelyn Adelle, and Virginia Ann. Later Hazel married Lester Ellsworth York in 1954. His children, Hazel's stepchildren, were Virginia York, Janet Reese, Barbara Parker, and Ellsworth York. Hazel and Lester owned York General Store in Decatur until his death in 1968. Hazel continued to run the store for another year. In 1969, she sold the store and moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked in the downtown JC Penney Store. In 1970, Hazel married Halley Gordon Russell. They moved back to Decatur County that same year. Gordon died in 1992. Hazel has lived in Leon, Iowa since 1993 and with her daughter, Evelyn, since 2003. Hazel accepted Christ as her Saviour during the later years of her life.

Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers Ival Albert Mainard and Earl Lee Mainard; sisters, Mable Loraine Dudley, Blanche Ethel Woods, Clara Belle Grout, and Ruth Ione Delk; step-daughter Janet Reese; and son-in-law Dick Morine.

Survivors include her three daughters, May Morine of Omaha, Nebraska, Evelyn and Bill Jensen of Leon, and Virginia and Marvin Martin of Decorah, Iowa; two step-daughters; one step-son; 12 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives; many friends; and her beloved pet dog Judy.

Hazel was a loving mother, grandmother, and a great friend to many. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. What our heart once knew, it shall never forget.
