DEATH NOTICE:

(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa April 6, 2011)

MARTIN, OSCAR DARRELL, 83, of Woodland, Iowa, died on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Iowa. Funeral Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa with Rev. Max Carmichael officiating. Burial was in the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established by the family.

OSCAR DARRELL MARTIN ... On March 30, 2011, Oscar Darrell Martin passed from this life to the Kingdom of Heaven to join his late wife, and the loved of his life, Georgia Luella [Tilford] Martin, at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Iowa.

Darrell was born March 18, 1928 in Leon, Iowa to Oscar Guy and Mary Ann [Hill] Martin. He was preceded in death by his father Oscar Guy Martin; mother Mary Ann Martin; wife Georgia Luella Martin; grandson Timothy Brett Wood; granddaughter Candi Sue Prause; brother Don Martin and his wife Billie; nephew Monty Martin; former daughter-in-law Heide Cook; and his buddy Elvis Presley.

Darrell is survived by daughter Mary Jo Wood and husband Larry of Osceola; son Richard Darrell Martin of Phoenix, Arizona; 3 grandchildren: Mark Aaron Wood and wife Carly of Des Moines, Iowa, Misty Mia Frank and husband Weston John, Jr. of New Braunfels, Texas, and Jonathan Darrell Martin of Phoenix; 7 great grandchildren: Joscelyn De Laney Jo Wood, Brayden Darrell Gregory Wood, Amanda Bankes, Megan Morris USAF, Matthey Morris, Devin Frank, and Hannah Frank; 2 great-great grandchildren, Kadin Dyer Bankes and Kandi Nicole Bankes; brother Doyle Martin and wife Phyllis of Leon; 3 nieces: Terri Naylor and husband Gene, Debbie Morgan and Donnie Thompson, and Cheryl Hutchison and husband Kenny; long-time companion Marjorie Watsabaugh of Humeston, Iowa; former daughter-in-law Connie Newell and husband Steve of Austin, Texas; extended family grandson Mike Schminkey of Des Moines, and Gerda Seiferth of Nuremberg, Germany; and a multitude of other relatives and friends.

Darrell's first gainful employment was with the Burlington Railroad. After their marriage, Darrell and Lue moved to Waterloo, Iowa and worked at the Rath packing Plant for two years. They then returned to the Woodland, Iowa area and purchased their first piece of farmland, to which they added additional acres through the years. They remained on their homestead west of Woodland for the remainder of their lives.

Darrell was known for his sense of humor and smile, and was matched only by his brother Doyle. Later in life Darrell discovered his amazing talents at whittling and chain saw artistry. Darrell and Lue shared an interest in collecting and trading Indian artifacts that had been collected on the family farm. Darrell enjoyed taking trips, gardening, and spending time with his family and friends. he especially enjoyed visiting Elvis' home, Graceland;and in Memphis.

Darrell will be greatly missed by all those who loved him or considered him a friends.
