CHARLES NEWTON ELMORE ... Charles Newton Elmore, age 88 of Eagleville, Missouri, died Tuesday night, March 24, 1987, at his home. He was a member of the Christian Church of Eagleville.

Mr. Elmore was born January 27, 1899, near Saline, Missouri, to Green R. and Mary Belle [Hamilton] Elmore in their rural home where he joined his two sisters, Florence and Mamie.

Charles attended North Star rural school. When about ten years old, the family moved by train to their homestead in Tripp, County, South Dakota. The family experienced early pioneer hardships and the droughts, so they returned by train to Missouri. Charles finished the eighth grade and earned a third grade teacher's certificate. Subsequently he taught in two rural schools in Harrison County, Missouri. Charles completed ninth grade at Pleasanton, Iowa. He then studied at Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, Missouri. there he finished high school and four years of college in just six years to graduate in 1923. After graduating, Charles began his career as superintendent and teacher in Iowa. He was the County Superintendent of Wayne and Warren County schools for a total of eighteen years.

Charles retired from teaching in 1960 and returned to the farm. He enjoyed living and working there with his family.

He was married to Marie Arvilla Cox of Carrollton, Missouri, on August 21, 1919 who preceded him in death as did his brother, Arthur; sister Mamie; grandson, Charles; daughter Shirley Perkins; and great great grandson, Michael Perkins.

Survivors include one daughter, Wilda Lewis and her husband Delrein of Promise City, Iowa; two sons: Murray and his wife Edith, of Bettendorf, Iowa; and Marvin and his wife Dorothy, of Cainsville, Missouri; also fourteen grandchildren; thirty-five great grandchildren; twelve great great grandchildren; sister, Florence Chapman of Chillicothe, Missouri; other relatives and friends.

Charles married Mildred Alley Todd in 1980. She also survives him.

Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 27, 1987, at the Slade & Duerr Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa with Rev. Jerry Henderson and William Hyle officiating. Interment was in the Freedom Cemetery, Lindley Township, Mercer County, Missouri.
