He was known as both Gene and as Combat. He attended School in Des Moines before the family moved to Oklahoma. Then he worked on the family farm and for Johnson's Creamery. He served in the United States Army from October 6, 1952 until he was discharged honorably on July 15, 1954 as a Corporal. He was a combat engineer who built bridges at night. His brother, F.A., was in Korea at the same time working as a medical aide. They were able to get together at times.

On March 11, 1960 he was united in marriage to Charlotte Jean Conley. They were blessed with three children, Brenda, Laurna, and Donald, before they divorced. Gene worked as a crane operator at Des Moines steel until he retired in 1987.

In his free time, Gene loved to listen to country music, watch rodeos and go fishing. He was a talented photographer, capturing nature's beauty. He also was a big Iowa Hawkeye and Kansas City Chiefs fan. He was a member of the American Legion. Gene's card was always the first to arrive for birthdays and Christmas.
