SARAH JANE WHITTINGTON ... The subject of this sketch was born in Pennsylvania, July 30, 1844, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edna Driscoll, near the age of 84 years, 4 months and 15 days. While she was yet a small child her parents moved to Dubuque, Iowa, then northern Missouri.

In 1865 she was united in marriage to Martin V. Helton who preceded her in death 17 years ago. To this union eleven children were born, three of whom died in infancy. The children are: W.O. Helton, Goshen, Mo.; Emmett Helton, Saline, Mo.; Ophie Putnam, Ravanna, Mo.; Earn Helton, Crystal, S.D.; Mrs Edna Driscoll, Weldon, Ia.; Mrs. Stella Lisle who died in 1922; Creed Helton, Cainsville, Mo.; and Mrs Edith Reed, Pleasanton, Ia.

Mrs. Helton was converted and united with the Freedom Baptist Church at the age of 12 years, and for the remainder of her seventy-two years has been an earnest and true Christian. Her greatest pleasure was in serving her Master and was always in the church services as long as her health would permit.

She was a loving and thoughtful mother, a kind neighbor, always working for her Master. She will be greatly missed in the community in which she always resided until the last year, in her church and the family circle. Besides the children mentioned above she leaves to mourn her passing 28 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and hosts of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 17, 1928, at the Freedom Church conducted by Rev. Prather of Leon, after which she was laid to rest in the Freedom Cemetery. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the entire community.
