(The Leon Journal-Reporter Leon, Iowa December 14, 2005)

HECKATHORN, Paul Edward, 91 of Van Wert, Iowa, died December 10, 2005 in rural Van Wert at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Kathy Heckathorn. Funeral services will be held today, 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 14 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon with pastor Jud Stover officiating. Burial will be in Van Wert Cemetery. Van Wert, Iowa. Family will be present for visitation at 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13.

A memorial fund has been established by the family.

PAUL EDWARD HECKATHORN ... Paul Edward Heckathorn, age 91 of Van Wert, Iowa, son of Harlan Harold and Hattie Viola [Miner] Heckathorn, was born October 31, 1914 south of Weldon in Decatur County, Iowa. He died December 10, 2005 in rural Van Wert at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Kathy Heckathorn.

Paul graduated from Van Wert High School in 1932. He married Enid Alma Osenbaugh on June 1, 1939 in Chariton, Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Alan, Kathleen, Roy, Owen, and Danny.

Paul was the Postmaster of the Van Wert Post Office for 32 years. He was active in the town as Van Wert Town Clerk, President of the Van Wert School Board, and clerking for many local sales and auctions. Paul was a long-time member of the Van Wert United Methodist Chruch and taught Sunday School.

In younger years, Paul enjoyed fishing and playing the fiddle. He always enjoyed visiting with relatives. Paul lovingly cared for his wife Enid before her death on April 16, 2000.

Paul had a long battle with Parkinson's disease and made his home at Osceola Extended Care following Enid's death. Paul was a kind, gentle and gracious man who loved his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Enid; brothers: Wayne, Herman, and Clifford Heckathorn; and sisters-in-law: Anna Mae, Delores, and Gertrude Heckathorn.

Paul is survived by his children: Alan Heckathorn and wife Lurline of Kelliher, Minnesota, Kathleen Hackathorn of Des Moines, Roy Heckathorn of Corpus Christi, Texas, Owen Heckathorn of Des Moines, and Danny Heckathorn and wife Kathy of Van Wert; 6 grandchildren: Adam Heckathorn and wife Kari, Laurie Morgan, Suzanne Detwiler and husband Henry, Sherri Werth and husband Andy, Amy Heckathorn, and Andrew Heckathorn; 10 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Fern Heckathorn of Ankeny; and other relatives and friends.
