ORLEND "CURLY" McKERN ... A grave-side memorial and Celebration of Life service for Orlend "Curly" McKern, 82, of ( ... ) will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Leon Cemetery in Leon, Iowa. A luncheon for friends and family will proceed the memorial service at Mt. Zion Church in Leon.

Curly died March 27, 2010 after a gallant battle with heard disease. He was proceeded in death by his parents. Hazel [Gilbert] McKern and Clarence McKern. He is survived by his daughters, Kelly (Bill) Roberts and Myra Burns, grandsons Samuel (Brooke) Settgast and Cory Fisher, granddaughters Veronica Perez and Emily Fisher, great grandchildren Gavin and Irey Perez, sister Marilyn (Loren) Bench, niece Debbie Buck and nephew Daniel (Vicki) Bench and many family and friends.

Upon discharge form the Navy her returned to Leon and finished High School, graduating with the class of 1949. Shortly after graduation he moved to Kansas City where he was employed by TWA. In later years he followed in his Dad's footsteps and went into construction work. Curly was a Master Cement Mason and took great pride in his work. He was most proud of his work on the decorative fountain and rock / cement at Crown Center in K.C., MO. Although Curly lived most of his adult life in Kansas City, he never lost his love and connection to Leon.

Curly often said, "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all"! To him, that pretty much described his three marriages.

Curly was passionate about his family, friends, his work, love of dancing and music, his record collection that numbered in the thousands, and above all his great grandson Gavin, who was his joy and sunshine during his long illness and in his darkest days. Gavin and his mother, Veronica lived with Curly and were a great source of comfort and companionship.

We are grateful to have been a part of Curly's life. His memory will be cherished and his quick wit greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Curly's name of Cotinua Hospice, 7611 State Line Road, Suite 202, Kansas City, MO 64114.
