(Mercer Newspaper Mercer, Missouri April 21, 1999)

HARLEY LEROY FLANAGAN ... Princeton - Harley Leroy Flanagan of Princeton, age 83 years and 5 months, died Sunday, April 18, 1999 at the Princeton Care Center.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 21 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel in Princeton, with speakers Clarence and Charles Snethen officiating. Burial was in the St. Paul Cemetery northwest of Princeton.

Mr. Flanagan, the second of five children of Johnny and Maymie Flanagan, was born in Decatur County, Ia., near Davis City, on Nov. 28, 1915. He attended the Hutchinson, Cavannah and Willis rural schools in Mercer County and as a young boy, studied catechism in the Catholic Church. He lived most of his life in Mercer County, except for one year when he traveled to the Dakotas to work the harvest fields.

He married Sylvia Bryan on Dec. 28, 1935 in Princeton. They lived and farmed in Mercer County all their married life, and he became active in the community by serving on the Red Rock school board. As a farmer, Mr. Flanagan was always lending a helping hand to his neighbors, doing veterinary work for many of them, and sharing his garden produce from his large vegetable garden with family and friends. He also played baseball in a farm league, loved fishing and hunting and in later years developed a joy for woodworking.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Sylvia, of Princeton; his daughter, Virginia Matson (and son-in-law, Curtis) of Independence, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Britanny and Brandon Matson, also of Blue Springs; one sister Ruth Dale (and brother-in-law, Orville) of Pleasanton, Ia.; and by nieces , nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Hildred and Viena Flanagan; a sister-in-law, Hazel Flanagan; and a nephew, Michael Flanagan.
