Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, April 2, 1914

HETTIE ELIZABETH SMITH was born in Kelloway (sic) County, Missouri, on the
1st day of May, 1825, being the third child of JOHN and SARAH SMITH, and
fell asleep in death on the 18th day of March, 1914, being aged 88 years, 10
months and 17 days. She was one of the real pioneers of this section of the
country, in early life having settled with her parents on the wild raw land
of Mercer County, Missouri, near what is now Princeton, but where then was
nothing but raw, native land. She had been an invalid nearly all her life
and her influence had been much handicapped on that account. But through
her troubles and afflictions she endured patiently in the end being very
victorious.

Very early in life she was converted to the faith which is in Christ Jesus
and united with the Baptist Church, being in that faith at the time of her
death. From 1866 until four years ago she made her home with her sister,
Mrs. CORYDON COWLES, on the old homestead east of Davis City, but on the
death of that dear one she went to the home of another sister, Mrs. F.I.
KRIDELBAUGH, of Ottumwa, to reside and here the end found her, ready and
waiting.

In her family there were 13 children and Miss SMITH is survived by four of
these, Mrs. JOSEPHINE KRIDELBAUGH, of Ottumwa; Mrs. MARGARET OWEN, of St.
Joseph, Mo.; ISAAC SMITH, of Amazona, Mo., and THOS. SMITH, of Orcut, Texas.
Her death saddens the hearts of many relatives and old friends in this
community and to them is extended the sympathy of all. The funeral service
was held from the Davis City M.E. Church, conducted by the Pastor, E.A.
Place, and the burial was made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery.
