WILLIAM S. TENNANT was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, March 6, 1838, and
departed this life at his home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, December 23, 1913, at the
age of seventy-five years, nine months and seventeen days.

In early life he moved with his parents to Des Moines County, Iowa, where he
grew to manhood. In the fall of 1861 he responded to the call of patriotism
and duty by enlisting in the 14th Iowa Infantry, Company K. He served his
country faithfully and well for over three years. While home on a furlough
in 1863 he was married to CHRISTENA TELFER, of Northfield, Iowa. To this
union four children were born, two sons and two daughters, viz: Mrs. ADDIE M
KIRKPATRICK, of Des Moines; GEORGE A., CLIFFORD and MRS. CORA E. TRIMBLE,
all of Mount Ayr. The children were all permitted to be at his bedside when
the summons came and the father was at rest. Besides the wife and children
there survive him sixteen grandchildren, two brothers, G.A. TENNANT of Mount
Ayr and Rev. R.J. TENNANT of Dana, Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. MCCLEARY, of
Diagonal, Iowa and Mrs. E. CARMEAN, of Leon, Iowa. To this list of
relatives may be added a host of friends and distant relatives to join in
mourning his departure.

In November, 1886, he was happily and soundly converted. His life has
adorned his profession. His has been a daily testimony for the King and a
constant rebuke to sin. His death was in keeping with a Godly life and was
one of quiet peace and holy triumph.

Unassuming, even modest and retiring in disposition, he lived as a patriotic
citizen, a staunch advocate of the right, a good neighbor, a trustworthy
friend, an exemplary Christian, a doting father and a model husband. The
world has been made the better because he has lived in it, hearts are lonely
because of his departure and a harder pull is made at our heart-strings
since he has passed to citizenship in the skies. There is one less to
answer at roll call in the Grand Army of the Republic and one more to
respond among the Grand Army of the Redeemed. One more has been promoted
from the ranks of the church militant to the victorious hosts of the church
triumphant.
