Leon, Iowa

LOUISA ELLEN BLAKE was born in Cochocton County, Ohio, June 9, 1845. She
passed away Dec. 31, 1913, at 2:45 a.m., amidst the scenes she loved best,
her home near Leon, where she had lived for the past 47 years.

She had a premonition of death and for the past few months had planned her
surroundings in many ways, that her family would be better prepared to
suffer their loss.

While she did not tell her children that she expected soon there would be a
vacant chair, she would change her place frequently at the table, thinking
that it might be easier for them to become accustomed to her absence. She
wrote to her absent children satisfying herself that they could be reached
at any unexpected moment, and when her condition became critical she asked
for her bed to be prepared, knowing that she would soon fall asleep to awake
in Heaven. She was aware that the end was near and when told that her
absent children would soon reach her bedside, she said, "I am glad to know
that they will be here, but I am afraid they will be too late," and before
they had reached her she had passed peacefully away, leaving to mourn their
loss a kind and devoted husband, ten children and seven grandchildren. One
son was taken away in childhood, the eldest daughter in early womanhood.
Mrs. ROBERT MCKEE, who lives at Anaheim, California; FRANK MILLS, of Hunters
Wash.; ROLL, of Tacoma; Mrs. A.W. DAVIS, who was unable to be here on
account of sickness, Miss MYRGIE, CHARLES, RALPH, OSCAR and CLIFTON, who
reside in this county.

She came to Iowa in December, (??) with her parents, JOSEPH and MARGARE
BLAKE, two brothers and two sisters, of which only one sister survives her,
Mrs. KIM HICKMAN, of Leon.

She was married to W.H. MILLS Oct. 29, 1865, and her entire married life was
spent in this county. She was a member of the Eden Prairie Church of Christ
and her life was one of service to others, seeking and uplifting what is
good.

Funeral services were conducted at her home Saturday, Jan. 3, 1914, at 10:30
a.m. by Wm. J. Campbell, evangelist of the Church of Christ. The text was
taken from the 11th chapter of John. To gratify her wish her six sons acted
as pall bearers and the body was interred in the Leon Cemetery.

The husband and children wish to express in public to the many friends and
neighbors who assisted us during the illness and death of our dear mother
that their kindness was so fully appreciated, they will not attempt to find
words to express their thanks.
