Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, December 4, 1913

SARAH A. SULLIVAN was born in Whitley County, Kentucky, April 6th, 1832, and
died in Davis City, Iowa, Nov. 25th at 7:30 a.m., 1913, being at the time of
her death 81 years, 7 months and 19 days of age. Gathered at last like a
ripe shock of corn by the "Golden Gleaner," the weary wheels of life stood
still, the sun sank behind a cloudless sky and sister SNYDER passed into the
great eternity beyond the portals of death.

SARAH A. SULLIVAN was united in marriage to MARTIN J. SNYDER, now deceased,
near Lineville, Iowa, Jan. 26, 1853, 60 years ago last January. To this
union were born six children, two sons and four daughters, as follows:
HANNAH N. SNYDER, MARY E. SNYDER, JOSEPH F. SNYDER, ELIZABETH H. SNYDER,
JOHN W. SNYDER and HARRIET M. SNYDER, all having died years ago. Mr. SNYDER
her husband, died April 6th, 1865, in the hospital at Williamsburg, Penn.,
as he was a soldier of the war of the rebellion. Afterwards Sister SNYDER
married GEORGE HASHMAN, near Lineville, Iowa June 30th 1866. To this union
were born JAMES EDWARD HASHMAN, deceased, and JULIA BELL HASHMAN, the only
living child at the time of her mother's death, now JULIA B. FRANKLIN, of
Davis City, Iowa. She was born near Lineville, Iowa, April 20th, 1870. Mr.
HASHMAN also, was a union soldier, and died at his home at Spring Valley,
Iowa, leaving SARAH A. HASHMAN (deceased) a widow for a great many years.
Mrs. SNYDER's father was a Methodist minister of which church she became a
member and died in the faith once delivered to the saints. The writer has
passed by her door many a time, as she lived five years in one of my houses,
and I have heard her singing her favorite songs, "No, Not One; No, Not One"
and "O'er Death's Sea in Yon Bright City," which songs were sung at her
funeral by request, at the home in Davis City, Iowa, Nov. 26, at 2 p.m.,
conducted by Bro. Henry Reed.

The deceased was laid to rest in the old cemetery at Davis City, Iowa, to
await the resurrection morning.

-- JOSEPH THARP.

I'm not sure my heart could stand losing two husbands and seven children to
death.
She is the only one buried in the old Davis City Cemetery -- don't know
where the rest of her family are buried..
