Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, October 2, 1913

MATTIE GOODMAN was born in Decatur County, Iowa, September 19, 1866, and
died September 24, 1913, aged 47 years and 4 days.

Her home was in this county all her life and for a number of years she has
resided in Garden Grove with her family.

Her parents were SAMUEL and HANNAH GOODMAN, and she was one of a family of
thirteen children, and five of her brothers and four sisters still survive
her.

She was one of a set of triplets, one boy and two girls, and the three were
especially devoted to each other throughout life, and the removal of this
link in the threefold chain is peculiarly distressing to the remaining two.

MATTIE was married to GEORGE BARTLETT, December 25, 1888. To this union no
children were born, but their home was a home for orphan children, three of
whom they have raised at different times, and the one now in the home,
THELMA, was dearly loved, and has been legally adopted.

Mrs. BARTLETT united with the Presbyterian Church in Garden Grove on
profession of her faith, February 19, 1906, and was always a faithful and
consistent member. At the time of her death she was president of the Ladies
Aid Society of that church, and as long as her health permitted she was
intensely interested, active and prompt in its work.

She was also an honored member of the Pythian Sisters.

As a member of the Woman's Relief Corps her decease will be deeply felt.
For a number of years she was one of the color bearers of that society, and
was faithful and active in attending to the needs of the poor and all the
affairs of the organization.

As a member of her church and in the various societies she will be greatly
missed, and her home and relatives and the community are indeed bereaved.

The following lines were written by a friend:

Farewell, my friend and husband dear;

My time has come at last;
And all the troubles of this world,

With all its cares, are past.
I've lived about the average time;

That God to woman has given;
At last an angel He has sent,

To welcome me to heaven.
My body in the grave yard lies;

Beside my friends so dear;
But meet me in that Heavenly home,

When you are called from here.

The funeral services were held at the home on Sabbath afternoon by Rev. John
Wilson, an excellent vocal chorus being furnished by the M.E. and
Presbyterian Churches.
