Leon, Iowa

Dr. DAVID R. SPRINGSTEEN was born January 28, 1844, near Morning Sun in
Louisa County, Iowa, two years before Iowa became a state. His boyhood days
were lived with his father on a farm until he was eighteen years of age when
he joined the army August 14, 1862. He belonged to Co. F. 19th Regiment of
Iowa Infantry, serving almost three years and was honorably discharged July
10, 1865. During his soldier life he saw much active service enduring much
hardship and many privations. He was in the raid on Van Buren, Arkansas, at
the capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the capture of Yazoo City,
Mississippi, the expedition to southwestern Texas, the occupation of
Brownsville, the expedition from Ft. Morgan against Mobile, Alabama, and in
the capture of the Spanish fort.

Following his discharge he returned to Iowa, where after a short time he
went to Mt. Pleasant and attended school. After completing his preparations
there he began to teach school and by his teaching in the winter and farming
in the summer he made it possible for himself to enter Iowa State University
where he received his medical education. After completing his course there
he came to Weldon and engaged in the practice of his profession for about a
year, after which he came to Decatur City in 1884, taking up the work of his
profession and here he has continued to work until the time of his sickness
and death. As a physician he was a man of more than average ability;
conscientious and careful with his patients, and stood well in his
profession.

After coming to Decatur, he met and married Miss ELIZA BROWN, Nov. 27, 1884.
To them were born five children, four girls and one boy.

After a period of sickness of about five months duration he passed away
September 23, 1913. During his sickness his faithful wife was constantly
with him faithfully ministering to his needs doing all that loving service
could do to relieve his distress. He leaves his wife, all of his children,
a brother and two sisters, and a host of relatives and friends mourning
their loss.

In the passing away of Dr. SPRINGSTEEN Decatur County and community loses a
valuable and esteemed citizen. His honesty and reliability, and his kind
and sympathetic nature during his long years of professional life has won a
place of highest regard and esteem for him. He will be greatly missed.

He was a member of Decatur G.A.R. Post No. 410, of the Order of the Eastern
Star and of the Masonic Lodge. He was made a Mason February 15, 1894, in
Decatur Lodge No. 109 and took great interest in the work of the order.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Decatur last
Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Members of the Masonic Lodge and of the
Eastern Star met at the home of the deceased shortly before the hour for the
service and marched to the church. The pall bearers, who were physicians of
the county, acted as escort. A choir of Decatur City singers sang several
comforting hymns at the church service which was conducted by Rev. Guy J.
Fansher, Pastor of the Leon Methodist Church. The services at the grave
were in charge of the Decatur Masonic Lodge assisted by members of the Leon
Lodge. A large number of sorrowing friends assembled for the services.
