Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, August 7, 1913

JOHN A. SMITH, of Pleasanton, Ia., passed to the great beyond, at his late
home July 27, 1913. Four years ago, to a day, he received a paralytic
stroke from which he has suffered ever since, but kind hands and loving
hearts ministered to his wants and the science of medicine done its best,
but death triumphed, as it will over our race. But thank God for more than
60 years he has enjoyed the conscious knowledge of sins forgiven and the
fellowship of Christ. Brother SMITH was born in Fayette County, Ohio, Marcy
29, 1832, and grew to manhood and was married in that county to Miss LOUISA
RUPERT, and to this union eight children were born, all save one are alive
and all but one were present at their father's funeral. His first wife died
in 1887. He was married the second time, December 9, 1890, to Mrs. MARY A.
DUNN, who survives him to mourn a loving husband.

Brother SMITH first joined the Dunkard Church, but for many years he and his
wife have been members of the Riverview Baptist Church, It was the pleasure
of the writer to have been his pastor and to have enjoyed the hospitality of
his home and to conduct his funeral, July 28, 1913, at 1:30 p.m. from the
Saints Church. The large auditorium could not hold all the people for the
deceased had lived in that community for more than fifty years. His was a
sunny disposition. He was the embodyment of good nature and it was a
pleasure to meet him emblimartical of a well rounded life. Beautiful
sheaves of wheat were upon the casket with a fine piece with the word
Father". The song service was excellent and the writer selected 12 verses
from the eighth chapter of romans, taking the 38th and 9th verses of the
same chapter as his text. Christ's undying love for his children was the
theme. The parting look taken and then Uncle JOHN's wearied body was laid
to rest in the Hamilton Cemetery, embalmed in the tears of his bereaved
loved ones. God bless and comfort them is my prayer for Jesus sake. Their
brother,

-- J.H. BURROWS.
