Decatur County Journal
Leon, Iowa
Thursday, August 13, 1913

MARY A. PAYTON was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, October 26, 1842, and died
July 30, 1913, being at the time of her death, 70 years, 9 months and 4 days
of age.

She came with her parents in 1851 to Linn County, Iowa, and after living in
Linn and Bremmer Counties until 1861, came to Decatur County and on July 13,
1865 she was united in marriage to AMOS MCLAUGHLIN, and to this union were
born five children, which only two survive, namely, Mrs. MARY C. CASH of O.
Creek, S.D., and C.E. MCLAUGHLIN, of Lamoni, Ia., and on Feb. 17, 1877 she
was left a widow.

Again on October 13, 1878 she was married to BENJAMIN AKES and to this union
two children were born, ELMER AKES, of Leon, and Mrs. HATTIE CLAYPOOL of the
same address. Since 1861, with the exception of a few years spent in
Arkansas, Mrs. AKES had lived in Decatur County.

At the tender age of fifteen she was converted and united with the Baptist
Church at Waverly, Iowa, and amid the storms and bereavements that had so
often crossed her pathway, she had put her trust in God. She was an active
worker in the church as well as in both home and foreign missions and we can
well say to her membership of the Tuskeego Baptist Church a pillar has
fallen.

Her children and step-children that survive her are as follows: Mrs. MARY C.
CASH, of O. Creek, S.D.; C.E. MCLAUGHLIN, of Lamoni; ELMER AKES and Mrs.
HATTIE CLAYPOOL, of Leon; Mrs. EMALINE DOBSON, of Decatur City; WM. H. AKES,
of Grand River; T.F. AKES, of Manilla; Mrs. LAURA WOODS, of Van Wert; T.F.
AKES, of Iona, Oregon; and Mrs. EVA WIONS, of Grenada, Col. Of her father's
family only two brothers survive, who are J.H. PAYTON, of Kellerton and N.D.
PAYTON, of Manturn, Col. Funeral was preached at the Elk Chapel by the
writer from 1st Samuel 20-18, to a large and sorrowing congregation of
relatives and friends, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Elk
Cemetery to await the resurrection.

Thus another of Decatur's old and respected mothers has passed to the Great
Beyond.
